The German Diary

Picture
The German Diary was written in cursive German and started August 19, 1865. Here's a snapshot of a portion of the first page, so you can see his lovely handwriting.

This leather pouch is locked tightly right now... but in its day, it carried and protected the diary that young Hugo wrote during his travels from Bremen, Germany to Calcutta, India.  The case appears to be expandable (there's a second lock hidden inside).

Paintings

Mom arranged for me in my early teens to take painting classes from Eugene Peart Bennett (Dec 1921- Nov 2010) in his studio in Jacksonville.  I think that she bought this painting from him during one of my classes.  The other two paintings might be also Bennett paintings, but I'm trying to verify.

This large fire painting was done by Edward Evanson’s sister Anna.  The story I was told was, that she was traveling by train back to Minnesota after visiting her brother, she passed a forest fire (maybe near Jacksonville, OR) and then painted this picture once she was home.  This painting was always strangely alarming, dark, gloomy --- and I really wasn't fond of it. Lately I found someone who wanted it, so I gladly gave it to him.
